Thousand Oaks is Ventura County’s second-largest city, located approximately 25 miles from From The Earth in Port Hueneme. This beautiful Conejo Valley city was the traditional home of the Chumash indigenous people. If you want something to do in Thousand Oaks, these are some of our local favorites.
Wildwood Regional Park
Wildwood Regional Park offers over 1,765 acres of public space for outdoor recreation and 1,400 acres of open space. The park is maintained by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. If you love to hike, there are more than 27 miles of trails, including the Mesa, Santa Rosa, Wildwood Canyon, and Moonridge. Popular landmarks include the spectacular 40-foot Paradise Falls, Arroyo Conejo Creek, the Nature Center, and The Indian Cave. Beyond hiking, park activities include biking, horseback riding, camping, and wildlife watching.

Conejo Valley Botanic Garden
This 33-acre botanical garden is adjacent to the Conejo Valley Community Garden near Tarantula Hill, the highest point in Thousand Oaks. The garden is home to a stunning vista overlook and 15 hillside gardens. It also serves as a teaching laboratory to study plant sustainability in the Conejo Valley. Some of our favorite gardens include the native plant garden and meadow, the butterfly garden, the Mediterranean garden, a bird habitat, and a rare fruit orchard.

Chumash Indian Museum
This indigenous interpretive center is located on the site of the former Sap’wi village inhabited by Chumash people before Europeans came to the Americas. Located within the 432-acre Oakbrook Regional Park, the museum is committed to preserving the history and culture of the Chumash people. Exhibits in the indoor museum showcase Chumash cultural artifacts, including acorn-grinding tools, woven bowls, and a reconstructed tomol canoe. Outside is a reconstructed Chumash village featuring replica ‘ap houses and a malamtepupi playing field. There’s also a guided tour of two rock shelters with archaic pictographs.

Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza
Thousand Oaks, Civic Arts Plaza, is the city’s premiere performing arts center. The building was constructed by Gold Medal-winning architect Antoine Predock and combines modern and postmodern design elements.
It houses the 1,800-seat Fred Kavli Theatre and has featured famous performers such as Willie Nelson, the Beach Boys, and Liza Minnelli. You can see everything from touring Broadway musicals to concerts to the resident orchestra, The New West Symphony. Fine arts exhibits are also showcased at the Fred Kavli Theatre Gallery in the center’s lobby.

This family-operated boutique winery was established in 2011. At Alma, they strive to craft world-class Bordeaux single varietals and unique blends. They hand-pick all their grapes from small lots and are meticulous in their practice of artisanal winemaking. The wines produced by Alma include splendid cabernet sauvignon variants and classic Chardonnays. Sample it all at the Sunland Vintage Winery Tasting Room at 1321 Thousand Oaks Blvd.
