Cannabis and Black History Month: Taking a Closer Look at the Roots of Cannabis

A logo for Black History Month

A logo for Black History Month

February is Black History Month, meaning that is the perfect time to examine how cannabis and Black Americans are tied to one another. Black Americans have helped shape the landscape of cannabis in the United States, though unfortunately, this does include a storied history of racism and injustice. Here at our cannabis dispensary in Port Hueneme, we want to take a moment to look at the history of cannabis, and acknowledge just how Black Americans have helped to legalize and destigmatize cannabis usage as a whole.

A Brief Background on Cannabis

While the origins of harvesting cannabis date back to as early as 500 B.C. in Central Asia, it eventually made its way through South Asia, then to India, and onto the Arab nations. This is the reason that some of the terms for cannabis are actually Sanskrit words, including ‘ganja’.

From there, thanks to the vast trading system, cannabis made its way to various parts of Africa some time during the 13th century. During the 1800s, the British used indentured servants from India and took them to the Caribbean to work on the sugar and rubber plantations located there on the islands. Some of these servants brought cannabis with them.

What resulted was a blending of Indian and Jamaican cultures with cannabis being introduced to the Black, Jamaican field workers. It was in 1833 when Britain declared that slavery was illegal, effectively outlawing it and freeing the Indian slaves that were on the islands. These individuals left the plantations and moved into various parts of Jamaica and Barbados, settling in and making lives, which in turn, made cannabis increase in popularity as it became introduced to more people.

So how did cannabis wind up in the United States? Sailors, immigrants, and trade merchants from the Caribbean brought cannabis with them to the ports. From there, Black and Brown communities began partaking in cannabis recreationally. However, the United States was hardly a stranger to cannabis in the first place, as many Black Americans during that time period had grandparents who worked on hemp plantations.

To this day, Jamaica and cannabis are still thought of together quite frequently, especially when looking at pop culture icon Bob Marley as well as other famous island musicians.

The War on Drugs

Under Richard Nixon’s presidency, the United States was subjected to a campaign best known as the ‘War on Drugs’. While this campaign, which began in 1971, is often seen as the culprit behind the criminalization of cannabis, the issues truly began with Henry J. Anslinger. In 1930, the end of prohibition, there was the formation of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, and with it, the first commissioner, Anslinger.

At the time Anslinger was brought into office, heroin and cocaine were already outlawed, leading to only one viable option to criminalize: cannabis. Despite the fact that prior to his term, he had gone on record to state the idea of cannabis making people ‘mad’ or violent was absurd, he still kept after criminalizing cannabis. This led to him attacking jazz music and cannabis, both of which were rooted in Black culture.

Jump ahead to the 1970s when Nixon was in office. Thanks to his administration, there is a huge disparity between how Black people and people of color get treated and persecuted when faced with drug charges compared to those who are white. These effects are still felt to this very day. In fact, according to a study conducted by UCLA, Black people are nearly four times as likely to get arrested for a cannabis-related crime than compared to white people.

The presidency of Ronald Reagan also played a role in this storied history as well and included his Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986. Not only did this further criminalize cannabis, but it also created something called mandatory sentencing laws. This meant that even for a petty, non-violent crime, such as marijuana possession, the person convicted would have to spend a minimum of five years in prison – a punishment that hardly fit the crime. Because of this, private prisons filled up with mostly Black men, and has cost the United States taxpayers a whopping $2.5 trillion.

A Brighter Future

While cannabis and the treatment of Black Americans have come a long way in recent years, there is still so much ground to make up. The legalization of cannabis has brought some amazing changes, including actually decreasing crime rates. In fact, violent crime in California has fallen by 15%. That means a lot to us personally, especially here at our cannabis dispensary in Port Hueneme, CA.

It is high time to right the wrongs and injustices carried out by the war on drugs, and no, we aren’t just referring to Nixon’s campaign. Those efforts were clearly rooted in racism and meant as a way to monetize the maltreatment of Black Americans. To begin with, anyone who is currently serving a sentence due to a non-violent, drug-related crime should be freed and have their records expunged. To still be serving time for something that is no longer illegal, and never should have been in the first place, is the antithesis of justice.

Not only that, but reparations should be made to Black and Brown communities all across America for the injustices that have been served. Social and equity programs need to be implemented to help those who were wrongfully prosecuted recover and reintegrate. Education remains at the forefront of change, though, and will make us hopeful for the future. By funding the education of cannabis for the new generation, we will help to unlearn the falsehoods enacted over the last four hundred years.

Until the current cannabis industry sees these types of changes, we will not be able to truly move forward. So this February, not only think about the Black Americans who have suffered due to wanting to freely enjoy cannabis, but do what you can to be a part of the change. Vote, advocate, donate: when we all come together, then we will truly pave the way for a brighter future.

The Top 7 Surprising Health Benefits of Cannabis

CBD and medical cannabis products

CBD and medical cannabis products

For many centuries, cannabis has been used for its medicinal qualities. Dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, as well as parts of the Middle East, the benefits of cannabis have been well-documented. During this time period, it was often used to help with the pain of toothaches and earaches. In fact, some Roman women of elite status even used it to alleviate their labor pains during childbirth.

In the modern era, you have probably heard of cannabis being used to help cancer patients undergoing chemo to help with depression as well as boost their appetite. Or maybe, you have caught wind about how it aids those who suffer from glaucoma. The U.S. Food and Drug administration has even, in recent years, approved the use of plant-based pharmaceuticals that include cannabis.

Before popping into one the best medical marijuana dispensaries in Santa Ana, you should know about some of the health benefits that cannabis has! Keep reading to learn more.

1.) Get Better Rest at Night

Discovering what the endocannabinoid system is capable of was perhaps one of the biggest breakthroughs for cannabis in the past 30 years. It was found that this system is directly responsible for maintaining the body’s endocrine system, which is responsible for regulating the processing of various hormones necessary for functioning effectively. And yes, this includes the hormone that makes sure that you get enough sleep at night!

If you are under a lot of stress and find yourself tossing and turning throughout the night, or unable to actually get a decent amount of sleep, try purchasing products that contain phytocannabinoids. This typically includes both THC and CBD.

2.) Manage Chronic Pain

Cannabis doesn’t just help you relax – it actually warrants a closer look. Have you ever heard of the endocannabinoid called ‘anandamide’? While it is always naturally present in the body, cannabis actually reacts chemically to the anandamide, which increases the amount in our blood stream. In turn, that allows us to feel less pain.

So if you or someone you know suffers from chronic pain, such arthritis, migraines, back pain, or perhaps another pain issue, recommend that they stop in one of the best medical marijuana dispensaries in Santa Ana and speak to a staff member about a product that could potentially help. This is also a great option for those who want to stay away from prescription painkillers.

3.) Reduce Anxiety

Did you know that roughly 40 million American adults suffer from some sort of anxiety? Not only that, but it can be a symptom of many other types of disorders as well. If you have ever dealt with anxiety, you know just how debilitating it can be. However, thankfully, there is a solution in cannabis.

If you are wanting to use cannabis as a viable option to help with anxiety, it is important to start off with small dosages and also look in the realm of CBD as opposed to THC. For some folks, getting too high of a dose of THC can make them paranoid or anxious, and this would clearly be counterproductive.

4.) Help with Inflammation

Inflammation is a culprit behind many medical issues, including joint pain, headaches, sclerosis, and even acne. Cannabis can help with this because it is actually also an anti-inflammatory, though for this, it is highly recommended to use something topical rather than a product you ingest. In fact, cannabis may even be helpful due to the positive effect it has on the body’s natural neuropathways.

Something that could really help is a CBD topical gel or lotion, such as this cream from Carter’s Aromatherapy Designs. Not only does it contain CBD, but it also has many other all-natural ingredients, such as coconut oil, shea butter, and lavender essential oil.

A container of CBD cream

5.) Seizure Control

If you have spent much time on the internet, you have probably seen videos circulating around that depict a child with seizures receiving treatment from cannabis oil drops or another similar CBD product. Typically, in a matter of minutes, the child’s seizures are dramatically reduced or have stopped completely. Thanks to clear-cut evidence such as this, among other research, the FDA has recently approved the plant-based version of CBD as a method to treat seizures in both children and adults.

6.) Improves the Immune System

In the light of the ongoing COVID pandemic, if there is one thing we all have learned, it’s the value of our immune systems. We want to remain as healthy as possible in order to fight illness, disease, and infection. Scientists have looked closely at the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the human brain as well as the immune system. Through this, they discovered that it is actually quite possible that cannabis can help the body retain homeostasis, which in turn, allows us to stay healthy and well.

7.) Managing PTSD

It is no secret that living with PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, can be a lifelong and often difficult thing to handle. Those who have PTSD tend to suffer from episodes that include flashbacks to their trauma, intrusive memories or nightmares, and even an intense amount of anxiety. This can wreak havoc on a person mentally, emotionally, and even physically.

In one study conducted in 2014, researchers actually found that CBD helped those with PTSD manage some of their symptoms, including to ease their anxiety and allow them to get better rest at night. If you or someone you love have a hard time managing PTS and its symptoms, stop in to talk to one of our helpful and knowledgeable staff members about a good starter product.

What Is the Difference Between a Head High and a Body High?

A woman smoking cannabis in a chair

A woman smoking cannabis in a chair

If you have been consuming cannabis for any length of time, odds are good that you have done a fair share of experimenting with various strains in an effort to find out what you did or didn’t like. Maybe one strain left you couch-locked with light limbs, or the other made you feel creative and alert. With so many different strains available on the market, it makes sense to want to find what is the best fit for you.

The reason that there are so many different strains of cannabis is because they each have unique highs that a person can experience. While these can get pretty specific, most strains fit into one of two overarching categories: a head high and a body high.

So what is the difference between the two? Which one is better? How can you determine which strain will give you which effects? Keep reading to learn more and get the answer to these questions!

What does a ‘head high’ mean?

While you have likely heard the term ‘head high’ before, you might not know what it means. Essentially, it refers to the psychoactive effect that cannabis can have on the brain and mental condition. Normally, even if you are partaking in a strain that is geared toward both a head and body high, you will feel the effects of a head high first.

With a head high, you will usually experience feelings of euphoria, happiness, and pleasure. Depending on the strain, you might also see a boost in your focus and energy levels, too. The strains geared toward a head high tend to help with certain disorders such as depression or anxiety.

As is a rule in cannabis consumption, dosing is important. The right dose will have you feeling the desired effects as described for that individual strain. However, an overconsumption can lead to paranoia and anxiety for a short stint of time. Since this is clearly not ideal, it is best to start with a small amount and work your way up.

What does a ‘body high’ mean?

On the other hand, a ‘body high’ is what you feel in your body when consuming cannabis. Typically, you feel light-limbed or experience other physical side effects. Either way, it is meant to relax and soothe the body.

Common effects of a body high include experiencing relaxed muscles, lethargy, and sedation. Depending on what product you purchased, you could also feel tingly sensations or physical sensitivity throughout your body. Turning to cannabis strains that have a body high focus is a go-to for those who suffer from any sort of chronic physical pain, such as fibromyalgia or arthritis. It has even been used to help alleviate pain in cancer patients undergoing chemo. Also, because it causes sedation, it has helped those with insomnia.

Again, paying keen attention to dosing is very important. The right amount of cannabis can trigger the desired effects, but taking too much can leave you couch-locked. If that is your desired goal, that’s great! However, if you’re simply seeking pain relief in order to get through various tasks, this might end up being counterproductive.

Do Chemicals Influence the High?

Cannabis plants have many different compounds within them. How concentrated each compound is depends on which strain you have. It all varies, which is what makes each strain unique and creates different types of highs and effects.

Cannabinoids are located inside of cannabis plants. In fact, there are over one hundred different types of cannabinoids. When cannabis is consumed, these cannabinoids attach the cannabinoid receptors in our bodies, which triggers the different effects we feel. Not every strain possesses the same type or amount of cannabinoids. For example, one strain might be higher in THC while the other is higher in CBD.

Another thing that influences a cannabis product is the terpenes present. Terpenes exist in all plants, and have an effect on flavor and aroma. As an example, terpenes help to determine if a strain is more energizing and stimulating, or if it will be more sedating and calming.

Sativa and Indica: Do They Have an Influence

Generally speaking, cannabis has three categories it falls into: Sativa, Indica, or a hybrid. Though with hybrids, they still tend to be either Sativa-dominant or Indica-dominant. While most folks believe that Sativa strictly means that it’s energizing and Indica means that it’s relaxing, it is actually not that simple. It does depend on the product. If you’re not sure, talk to one of our helpful budtenders at any of our dispensaries for assistance.

Jars filled with cannabis

The Best Strain for You

No two cannabis strains are the exact same, making them unique – just like you! So what works best for you might not work best for the person standing next to you in line at the dispensary. It all depends on what you’re looking for. Take any medical conditions into consideration, or any goals that you might have in mind when using cannabis.

For example, are you looking to feel more inspired or do you want a boost of creativity? Or do you need a bit of relief from joint pain or other issues? Getting the answers to these questions will help you to determine which is best for you!

Wanting to Try Edibles for the First Time? Check Out Our Easy 101 Guide!

Cannabis cookies with a label marked 'edibles'

Cannabis cookies with a label marked'edibles'

Even if you’re new to the world of cannabis, odds are good that you have heard of edibles. You may have seen them for sale at our cannabis dispensary in Hanover, MI, or you have had friends tell you about their experiences with trying them. If so, these types of conversations have likely piqued your interest!

If you’re curious about trying edibles, prior to getting started, you need to keep reading to gain some insight. You don’t want to just buy the first thing you see and end up with a negative experience! We’re going to take a closer look at what they are, the different types, and what effects they have on the body and mind.

What is an edible?

By definition, an edible is a type of cannabis-infused food product that is typically either consumed orally (eaten) or absorbed by putting it under the tongue or inside the cheek. There are many different types of edibles out there, each one coming with a unique set of benefits and varying degrees of highs.

For example, if you are a fan of sour candies or fruit chews, there are certainly a variety of options, including Kanha’s cherry chews. Or if your sweet tooth lies in the realm of chocolate, you can also pick up something decadent and delicious, such as Haze and Main’s cookies and cream bar. Regardless of what your flavor preferences are, you can always find something that suits your taste on the menu.

Here at From The Earth, we also carry many products that are vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free to accommodate a variety of dietary needs. So if you prefer an edible in that realm, odds are good that we have you covered!

What are the different types of edibles?

Though we touched on them briefly, there are actually several different types of edibles. Baked goods, fruit chews, hard candies: the possibilities are nearly endless. Keep reading to learn more!

  • Baked Goods:

A ‘pot brownie’ is a favored choice to mention in pop culture, but it is hardly the only one out there. While this particular treat may have laid the groundwork for other edibles, it has expanded since then. Pancakes, muffins, cookies, birthday cakes, etc.! The list goes on and on. Don’t see what you want in the store? No problem – you can even make your own baked edibles at home, too!

  • Gummies and Chews:

If you’re a fan of sour things, or you enjoy gummy candies or even bubble gum, then you will love indulging in this type of edible. Be mindful when taking them, however, as with any edible, the effects do take some time to kick in.

  • Mints and Hard Candies:

Freshen your breath with a cannabis kick by reaching for mints or other hand candies. Most of the time, these candies are meant to be consumed by sticking it inside your cheek or under your tongue, just like you would most mints or other hard candy treats. However, be aware that this can cause a high to kick in faster than just eating it.

  • Chocolate:

The holidays may be behind us, but chocolates are a year-round favorite, especially with Valentine’s Day coming up. No matter which chocolate is your favorite: milk, dark, mint, white, cookies and cream, and so on, edibles are available in these flavors! Just talk to one of the helpful staff members at our cannabis dispensary in Hanover, MI, and they can help get you in the right direction.

  • Drinks and Drink Mixes:

Yes, that’s right – edibles don’t necessarily have to mean food. You can also find cannabis-infused beverages. Iced tea, lemonade, and even some alcoholic beverages, such as hard seltzers, are available with cannabis. Just like with mints or hard candies, most of the cannabis in drinks are absorbed through the cheek and tongue,

Which edibles are the most potent?

Typically, baked goods or chocolate tend to be the most potent. However, it all depends on the amount of cannabis found in the product. Before consuming, make sure to properly read the label and account for the recommended dosage. Also, you can ask one of the helpful From The Earth staff members for more information when going to make a purchase. Edibles are best enjoyed when they’re used correctly!

Pink and green cannabis macaroons

What types of highs or benefits can you get from edibles?

Once again, this depends on the product that you are using. For some folks, they enjoy edibles to help them sleep at night or to alleviate aches and pains or even stress and anxiety. For others, some may be looking for a more psychoactive effect, or are seeking to get couch locked. On the packages of products, it should be noted what type of high or benefits usually occurs upon consumption.

What is the most common type of edible?

While this all depends on the person, and product sales tend to be different from state to state, the common denominator remains that baked goods and hard candies are the go-to choice. However, no matter which one you choose, the most important thing to remember when trying edibles is to start off slow.

Unlike smoking or vaping, consuming edibles takes quite a bit of time to kick in. Anywhere from 30-45 minutes sometimes, depending on the product, how hungry you are, and your body mass. If you’re just starting out, take it slow! Start with a small bite or a lower end dosage and wait up to an hour to feel the effects before trying another bite.

What type of edibles should you try?

Well, the answer to this question is wholly up to you! Are you after a quick snack, or are you wanting to indulge in a sweet treat? Do you love trying different flavors of hard candies, or are you in the mood for a beverage? Regardless, come stop by our cannabis dispensary in Hanover, MI and let one of our helpful staff members be a guide! We are always here to help our customers have the best experience with edibles, and cannabis in general, as possible.

3 Great Uses for Your Extra Weed

Nuggets of weed on a table

Nuggets of weed on a table

It’s a very good problem to have, having excess weed. Whether you’ve been growing your own weed or you have some raw flower still hanging around from a recent purchase from our cannabis dispensary in Long Beach, there are some ways you can get creative with using what is leftover.

So what can you do? Other than just rolling it and smoking it or storing it away for later, keep reading to check out our list of some unique ways to get the most out of your extra weed.

Bubble Hash / Ice Water Hash

If you are looking for a cheap, easy, and chemical-free way of transforming your extra weed, we highly recommend turning it into bubble hash. Sometimes dubbed as ‘ice water hash’, bubble hash is created by using extremely cold temperatures to remove trichomes from buds and plant material, which are harvested and collected to make hash.

Because of the way it melts and bubbles, it is called bubble hash, known for its meltability. Using a one to six star scale, bubble hash is graded on it’s refinement. In this case, six is the highest at ‘full melt’ quality.

In order to make even a small, potent amount of bubble hash, you’re going to need a lot of flower. Our recommendation is to begin with about an ounce, if not more. To create bubble hash, you need a small list of gear, some of which you may already have on hand.

  • Two 5-gallon buckets
  • Bubble bags
  • Ice
  • Tap water
  • Stirring stick

To begin the process, soak your bud in a 5 gallon bucket filled with ice water for at least 20 minutes. From there, mix it and stir it around, agitating the bud. Once that is done, pour everything into the second bucket, this one containing a bubble bag.

If you don’t know what bubble bags are, they are a set of mesh bags. They are sold in varying degrees of fineness or microgrades. Once your ice water and planet material mix is poured into the set of bubble bags, pull them out one at a time to refine or further refine the trichome mixture

Rosin

For another great idea that is chemical-free and can be made at home, take a closer look at making rosin. Rosin is created by using both heat and pressure. By pressing buds between two heated plates, a hot oil will ooze out. That oil is called rosin.

A simple way of making rosin is by using parchment paper and a curling iron. Though make sure it isn’t the same curling iron you plan on using to style your hair, later because it is going to get a bit sticky!

Or, you can always choose to invest in a rosin press. They can vary in cost, but most are around a few hundred dollars. These presses are often equipped with a device to help you pack flower into neat little pucks. Those pucks are what you then press.

Once you are done pressing, remove the wrung-out weed from the parchment paper then scrape off some rosin with a dab tool and load it up into your favorite dab rig.

Cannabutter

Are you an edibles lover? The holiday season is right around the corner, and baking is an especially fun holiday passtime. You can spice up your pumpkin pie or other favorite dish by adding in a bit of cannabutter. It will taste all the more delicious knowing it’s something you made yourself!

So what will you need to get started? The list is easy:

  • 7-10g weed
  • 1 cup of butter
  • 1 cup of water
  • A cheesecloth

To begin, you will need to decarb (aka decarboxylate) your weed prior to simmering. To do this, heat it at a low temperature for around 30 minutes. This will work to activate the weed, changing it from THCA to THC, which is what will get you high. When you’re smoking, this process is done with the flame from your lighter. However, when you’re making cannabutter, your oven does the work.

Once you have decarbed your weed, simmer it in butter and water for a few hours. From there, strain it through your cheesecloth. Let it solidify and stand up before throwing it in your favorite baked good recipe. Remember, as an important rule of thumb when ingesting edibles: go slow!

If you’re interested in making your own cannabis coconut oil, you would follow a similar process. Cook with it, add it to your favorite foods, or even use it as a topical – there are so many possibilities!

A plate of brownies with cannabis leaf

Tinctures

If you are looking to make a cannabis product that is discreet, fast-acting, and easy to use, take a closer look at tinctures. They do not have an odor and you can simply add a few drops under your tongue. While tinctures do take a little longer to make than the aforementioned methods, they will stretch and last you a long time.

To begin, start by soaking your flower in high-proof, ethanol-based alcohol. We recommend something like Everclear or moonshine. A good baseline is about an ounce of weed per 750mL bottle of alcohol.

Just like we talked about in the cannabutter example previously, you will need to decarboxylate your weed first. Once that step is done, put it in a mason jar with alcohol for a few weeks. Remember to shake it at least once per day! Finally, strain it through a coffee filter and you’re all set.

How to Use CBD to Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder

A young woman in a winter coat smoking cannabis outdoors

A young woman in a winter coat smoking cannabis outdoors

This time of year is known for many things: get-togethers with family and friends while eating a lot of good food, holiday shopping for the perfect gift, and doing all your favorite activities related to the changing of the weather. While there are so many positive things about the onset of fall and winter, if you’re someone who feels down once summer fades away, know that you are not alone. In fact, you may be one of the millions of Americans who suffer from SAD.

What is ‘SAD’?

SAD is seasonal affective disorder, a condition that is caused by the oncoming of the colder months where we tend to feel sad, tired, and sluggish. Often dubbed as the ‘winter blues’, it’s common among many Americans, especially after the time change. This is because we are spending less time out in the daylight, the sun usually setting below the horizon before we’ve even had a chance to finish our commute home from work.

Overall, seasonal depression just leaves us feeling not at all like ourselves. While it can manifest in different ways and affect people differently, we want you to review this quick list of symptoms:

  • Carbohydrate or sugar cravings
  • Significant decline in overall energy
  • Social withdraw
  • Tendency to sleep a lot or go to bed much earlier than usual
  • Weight gain
  • Persistent sadness, seemingly out of nowhere
  • Lack of motivation
  • Difficulties sleeping or staying asleep throughout the night

While this is not a totally comprehensive list, if any of these sound like you, know you’re not alone! Unfortunately, we all can’t flee to some tropical paradise and wait it out until the winter months are done and over with. However, we have another, more realistic solution in mind: CBD.

Medical Cannabis Can Help

Depression and anxiety are often caused by reduced levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain. When we have too little of these chemicals, we find ourselves feeling sad and disconnected, having a negative impact on our mood. Dopamine and serotonin actually serve as our brain’s neurotransmitters and play an important role in regulating our mood.

Don’t worry, we do have some good news – one of the main active compounds found in CBD has been proven to help boost serotonin and dopamine levels. This happens when the cannabinoids in CBD interact with our body’s endocrine system.

Which types of cannabis should you use?

To put it simply, you want to purchase products that are high in CBD. One thing that is important to note is that products containing only CBD, and no other compounds, will not have any psychoactive effects. This is worth mentioning just in case you are seeking to use cannabis to help alleviate some of the symptoms of SAD but are not wanting any of the ‘high’ feeling that comes along with it.

If you are seeking prolonged relief, we recommend using CBD oils or CBD capsules and ingesting them. These should take a little while to work, but you will feel the effects from anywhere from 6 to 12 hours.

For instant relief, we recommend vaping with CBD-infused dried flower. When using this type of product, the onset of effects should come on in just a few minutes.

What is CBG?

CBG molecule make up with cannabis flower in the background

CBG molecule make up with cannabis flower in the background

When discussing cannabinoids, THC and CBD tend to be the frontrunners, as they are the most commonly seen in products and prevalent within the cannabis community. THC and CBD exist in thousands of products, ranging from traditional flower to edibles to massage oils.

However, did you know that there are over one hundred different, unique cannabinoids out there? This includes CBG. While it is lesser-known, it is worth learning about for a number of reasons.

And why is that? Well, first, we need to explore what CBG is and what it means.

What is CBG and how is it made?

CBG is short for cannabigerol and it is present in most cannabis strains, though it is usually only about 1%. That is why it is considered a minor cannabinoid. Cannabis plants produce cannabigerol acid (CBGA), which serves as a precursor to the three main cannabinoid lines: THCA, CBDA, and CBCA.

Specific enzymes work together within the plant to break down CBGA and route it to the three lines. Once those acids are exposed to elements such as heat or ultraviolet light, they become the cannabinoids we already know: THC and CBD.

Recently, breeders have begun experimenting with genetic manipulation and cross-breeding plants in order to get a higher yield of CBG. By zeroing in on the best extraction time, scientists have been able to extract even higher amounts of CBG. Typically, the best extraction time is about six to eight weeks within the flowering cycle.

Potential Medical Benefits

Now that some of the technical talk and science is behind us, let’s explore why it’s important to look closer at CBG: the possible medical benefits.

The human body is equipped with the ECS, or better known as the endocannabinoid system. The ECS works to keep the body balanced and achieve homeostasis, which is physiological equilibrium.

In general, the endocannabinoid system helps to perform various functions specific to each area of the body, from the brain to the skin. As an example, when you are injured and suffering from inflammation, the ECS can help regulate immune cells to help limit inflammation and pain.

  • Eye structures: Endocannabinoid receptors are especially prevalent with eye structures. CBG is thought to be particularly helpful with issues such as glaucoma because it reduces intraocular pressure. It is also a strong vasodilator and comes with the added benefit of a neuroprotective.

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease: In a study conducted on rats, CBG was found to help decrease the inflammation characteristic of IBS. IBS affects over 200 thousand Americans each year and can have a debilitating effect and keep them functioning within normal life. By exploring CBG for IBS, it could make treatment more readily available and prove relief.
  • Nerve Cell Degeneration: Huntington’s disease is a well-known degenerative disease that affects the brain. In a 2015 study conducted on mice with Huntington’s Disease, CBG was shown to protect neurons in the brain. This could mean new opportunities for older adults who have a predisposition to Huntington’s due to genetics.

  • Cancer Fighter: Great promise has been shown for CBG as far as its ability to aid in fighting cancer. Specifically, studies have showcased CBG’s ability to block receptors that can cause cancer cell growth. In a study conducted on mice, CBG was shown to inhibit the growth of colorectal cancer cells, therefore slowing colon cancer growth. CBG inhibited tumors and chemically-induced colon carcinogenesis.

  • Anti-bacterial agent: Ever since the 1950s, topical formulations of cannabis have proven to be an effective solution for skin infections, even if at the time researchers were unaware of the plant’s chemical make-up. Evidence has shown that CBG is also effective as a means of an antibacterial agent, especially against the aggressive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or better known as MRSA. This is a huge breakthrough as many microbial strains have evolved and become resistant to several classes of drugs.

  • Appetite inducer: While being an appetite-inducer is also a health benefit of THC, harnessing CBG can be a non-psychoactive way of achieving such a benefit. Cachexia is the metabolic mutiny that occurs in cancer patients who see major weight loss and muscle mass deterioration. Research has shown that a form of purified CBG was able to be an appetite stimulant in rats.

  • Bladder Disorders: When five different cannabinoids were put to the test against bladder contraction, CBG proved to be the front-runner and inhibiting muscle contractions. Because of this, it could be the future of preventing bladder dysfunction disorders.

As more and more research is conducted on CBG, we could very well see new products featuring this particular cannabinoid so that it is more readily accessible to the public. Being able to include CBG could mean more advances in cannabis for medical use and an all-natural way to treat some of the disorders that we explored above.

Overall, CBG is also worth exploring because of its non-psychotropic characteristics. A psychotropic is any drug that has an effect on behavior, mood, thoughts, or perception. This would make CBG a great candidate for potential use as an antidepressant, treating psoriasis, and even for pain relief.

Outdoor Cultivation 101

Woman holding pot with young weed plant

Woman holding pot with young weed plant

If you’re looking to start growing your own weed outdoors, it can be a bit difficult to know where to begin. With all of the information out there, we want to help you sift through the extra stuff and provide you with a quick 101 guide to growing your own weed outdoors. While it may seem like a complicated process at first glance, the truth remains that all you really need is a little sun, a little water, and a lot of patience and care.

Just like with growing any plants outdoors, depending on where you live also dictates the growing process. But if you have a sunny spot in your private yard, or even on your balcony, terrace, or rooftop, odds are good that even you can grow some cannabis yourself.

Before embarking on this new journey, take a moment to review the benefits of growing, as well as some beginners’ tips and tricks to help make the process smoother and more enjoyable.

Benefits of Growing Weed Outdoors

While you can always buy your own weed, of course, there are certainly some benefits to growing outdoors. Check them out below!

Affordable Start-Up: If you have ever tried to grow weed indoors, you know that it can be very expensive. You need all of the proper equipment, including the correct lights, AC units, dehumidifiers… and well, it adds up quickly and can certainly take a toll on your wallet. However, when growing outdoors, you will just need some soil, fertilizer, seeds or clones, and maybe even a small greenhouse just to get the plants started.

Better Yields: When you grow indoors, you are limited to how much weed you can yield. However, the sky can be the limit with outdoor plants! As long as they’re still manageable, you can let them get as big or as tall as you’d like. Just one plant can potentially produce between a half-pound and full-pound of dried weed. It will be more than worth your time and investment.

Good for the Environment: Growing indoors has a time and a place, but overall, it can be considered a bit wasteful. All of those lights, dehumidifiers, and fans use up a lot of energy and electricity. When growing outdoors, the biggest elements you need – the sun, wind, and rain – are all free!

Mental Health Boost: Gardening can be very relaxing. It can serve as a great way to unplug from our electronics and connect with the earth with ample opportunity for fresh air and plenty of sunshine. This is sure to give you a boost of serotonin! Plus, there is nothing like the pride that comes with enjoying something you grew with your own two hands!

How to Set Up Your Outdoor Space

Before you begin, keep the following important considerations in mind.

Local Climate: Prior to beginning, the first thing that you need to be aware of is the climate in your area. While cannabis is highly adaptable and can thrive in various conditions, it is still quite susceptible to extreme weather.

When the sustained temperatures reach above 85°F, cannabis plants will stop growing. On the other hand, when sustained temperatures reach below 55°F, it can be harmful and can even stunt the plants to the point of death.

Heavy rains and high winds can also reduce the quality of yields or cause physical damage to plants. During the flowering stage, excessive moisture can lead to mold or mildew.

Location, Location, Location: After you have an idea of the climate in your area, it’s time to pick the perfect spot! There are a few tips you should consider.

  • Sunlight: In order to thrive and grow correctly, weed needs full, direct sunlight for at least six hours a day. Initially, your backyard might seem like a good spot, but if it doesn’t achieve this amount of sunlight, then it may not be the most ideal choice after all. The best sun is achieved during midday, as that is where it has the best quality for nourishing plants. As fall approaches and the days get shorter, it will trigger the flowering stage.

  •  Wind: While having a constant breeze is good for your plants, especially in areas of hotter climates, too much wind can be damaging. If you are in a particularly windy spot, consider planting your cannabis near a windbreak of some sort, such as a wall, fence, or large shrubbery.

  • Privacy & Security: Unfortunately, when growing cannabis, there is always a concern for privacy and security. Whether that is from nosy neighbors or potential thieves, you want to protect your assets. Unless you live in a more secluded area, you can opt for tall fences or large trees or shrubs. Remember, most state laws require that cannabis plants be concealed from view from the street.

The Right Dirt: The soil that you use for growing is extremely important, as it is literally the area in which the plant will spend most of its life. Most outdoor weed growers will do one of two options: they will plant directly into the earth and then add fresh soil, or they will use a pot or planter.

If you go the first route and plant directly into the ground using pre-existing soil, you might consider getting a soil test first. These are usually very affordable and can save you a lot of headaches in the long run. A simple soil test will tell you the makeup and pH of your soil, if there are any contaminants present, and what sort of materials or fertilizers would work well with your soil.

When planting in a pot or planter, you can curate your growing experience a little better by choosing the potting soil in advance. This will also help make it easier to move the plant should you need to get it out of extreme elements, such as a thunderstorm or cold snap.

What is an Infused Pre-Rolled Joint?

Close up of hand holding joint with smoke

Close up of hand holding joint with smoke

When you look at the wide array of cannabis products on the market, one can understand why it may feel overwhelming to navigate. There are hundreds of brands producing a variety of different products that appeal to people of all backgrounds. Many of us wonder – What product is right for me? How do I choose?

When shopping for a product it’s important to do your research, ask questions and always buy from a legal business. Learning how to navigate this industry takes time and willingness to learn. For those looking to dip their toes in the water or something they can enjoy on the go – pre-rolls are a good place to start.

Pre-rolls have always been a popular option, especially for those who appreciate the convenience of having their favorite flower perfectly rolled and ready to smoke. Plus, they are easy to take out and enjoy with only a lighter. Quick, discrete, and perfectly dosed, pre-rolls are a great choice.

While it can be fun to experiment with different types of bongs and vaping methods, sometimes all you want is the ease of enjoying a perfectly rolled joint that will burn evenly and give you the perfect high. Now, thanks to infusions, you can amplify this experience with an enhanced version of your favorite pre-roll and really diversify your cannabis experience. Combining together a blend of flower and resin, you are able to maximize not only the potency and quality of your high but the flavor and smoothness of it as well.

So, what exactly is an infused pre-roll? Let’s take a closer look!

Infused Pre-Rolls: The Breakdown

The aim or goal for the common pre-roll is that it is perfectly crafted by a professional and contains the best flower that the dispensary or shop has to offer. It is designed to provide a balanced, enjoyable smoke without any of the hassles that can come with having to roll it yourself.

An infused joint goes just a step beyond that and exists to include add-ins or ingredients to help boost both flavor and the type of high. This can include hash, oil, kief, a combination of strains or flavors, or even diamonds (the cannabis derived ones that is). They can be as small as a half gram or be made up of multiple grams, with a price range starting at $9 and working up to over $100. Whatever kind of combination you’re after, it can be purchased!

A popular option includes both a THC and CBD combination infusion, especially when being used for medicinal purposes. These tend to have a higher concentration of CBD resins, oil, and strains to better harness the healing qualities of CBD. If you find the right mix for you, you can both receive your desired head high as well as the high you want for your body, too.

Of course, you can craft an infusion roll at home, but just like when you go to a professional bartender and your drink always tastes better, the same concept applies here. Let the pros take care of this one and just kick back and enjoy the enhanced flavor and high!

Why the hype?

With these infused pre-rolls gaining traction and sparking in popularity, you may stop and ask yourself: so why the hype? According to data brought forth by Marijuana Business Daily, pre-rolls sales skyrocketed during the pandemic. Prior to COVID-19, pre-roll sales made approximately $640 million. By the end of 2020, those numbers had made a significant leap to $942 million.

The pandemic affected these sales because rather than attending parties and smoking with friends, people were opting to purchase professional pre-rolls, especially if they were partaking alone. This helped to minimize any waste or over-rolling. It also allowed customers to sample a larger variety of bud, rather than having to buy one particular flower and keep smoking that until it was gone.

Infused rolls help accomplish the same thing. You are able to try out many different infusion blends, finding the right product and mix for you for any particular occasion. If you need something more on the medical side, you can get something with a higher CBD potency. If you’re wanting to experiment with flavors, you can purchase something with a particular wax or oil add-in.

Just like the magic of a build your own burrito place, you can select the perfect combination for yourself!

What to Expect Your First Time at a Cannabis Dispensary

From The Earth cannabis dispensary in Hanover, MI staff member with customer

From The Earth cannabis dispensary in Hanover, MI staff member with customer

The first time you walk into a cannabis dispensary in Hanover, MI with your medical marijuana card, you might have a few questions or concerns. Thanks to long-standing stigmatization around cannabis, you may even feel like you’re doing something wrong or may even find the very idea of entering a little bit intimidating.

While that feeling is understandable and even normal, we don’t want you to feel that way! A cannabis dispensary should be a welcoming and inviting place that is both informative and free of judgment. However, no matter what, it is still best to be prepared prior to walking in the front door.

So what exactly should you expect and what do you need to do to prepare? Let’s find out!

Expect to be Carded

Every time you walk into a dispensary, whether you are barely 21 or are pushing 70 and bear a striking resemblance to Bernie Sanders, you’re going to need to have your state-issued ID ready. Staff members are going to need to look at it the very moment you walk in the door, and they may even ask to see it again at the register when you go to finalize your purchase. This is normal! So keep your ID somewhere that it is easily accessible.

If you live in a state where cannabis is legal but approved only for medical use, make sure you have your medical marijuana card ready as well as your state-issued ID. Once again, you are likely going to have to show it again at the register when checking out. Even if you become a ‘regular’ around your favorite dispensary, it is absolutely necessary to bring your ID and/or medical card with you each and every time.

Some dispensaries service both. For example, at our cannabis dispensary in Hanover, Mi, we welcome medical patients as well as adult recreational users.

Do a Little Research

Whether it is through word of mouth and personal recommendation by a friend or by browsing through reviews on the internet, it’s important to do a little research before choosing a dispensary. If you have friends who smoke, make sure to check in with them. Do they have a favorite spot or budtender? Why do they recommend this shop? Likes or dislikes?

If you don’t have a personal reference to go by, that’s okay! Hop online and read through various customer reviews. If there is one thing you can say about the internet, it’s that people have no problem being honest on it, especially when leaving reviews. Be sure to read through to look for a few important things, such as how many stars or likes does the establishment have? Are the staff typically credited as being helpful and patient and willing to answer questions? What about the selection of products, are they affordable and fairly priced? These are just a few things to keep in mind.

Wait a Minute

In the medical market, you may be asked to wait outside in a lobby or sitting room before going into the main part of the dispensary. Oftentimes, only one customer is permitted back. If this happens, it’s perfectly normal and is important for protecting patient privacy. While you’re waiting, don’t just scroll aimlessly through social media. Try to make the most of your time by browsing through the shop’s products, or preparing any questions you may have in order to expedite the process.

Due to COVID-19 practices, even some recreational stores may only permit a single person or a very small number of customers in at a time as a way to encourage social distancing. Again, if this is the case, take advantage of your downtime and prepare in advance to expedite the process once you’re inside.

Look, but Don’t Touch

In most medical-only cannabis dispensaries, you will be permitted to look at the product, but you won’t be allowed to touch it yourself, especially when it comes to bud or flower. Your budtender is there to handle it for you, and can answer any questions you may have. You can certainly look at it up close, but won’t be able to touch it until after it’s been purchased.

Don’t Feel Pressured

If for some reason, you don’t feel like making a purchase today, that’s okay! We understand. Buying cannabis is something totally new for you, and maybe you were just popping in to do a little research and get your bearings or check out the atmosphere. No matter what, you are always welcome to leave, though we hope you’ll come back and see us again soon!

Take a Moment to Reflect

After your first visit, take a moment to reflect on how it went. What did you like about the atmosphere? Did you feel welcome? Was the staff helpful? Were you honest with your questions, needs, and concerns?

After you’ve considered these questions, visit the cannabis dispensary’s website and leave an honest review about your experience. After all, this will be the roadmap that will be a guide for future beginners, as well as a helpful tool for the dispensary’s staff.

What is CBN and What Are its Benefits?

Cannabis produces many types of cannabinoids. In fact, there are more than one hundred different cannabinoids that are found in cannabis plants. Though the two you may be most familiar with are THC and CBD which you are most likely to find for sale at your local cannabis dispensary.

Cannabinol or CBN is a minor cannabinoid found in cannabis. CBN has a multitude of its own added health benefits and due to the entourage effect, works best when paired with other chemical compounds found in cannabis. This can include other cannabinoids, terpenes, or flavonoids.

So what exactly is CBN, and what are its benefits? Let’s find out!

What is CBN?

To answer this question simply, CBN is a non-intoxicating compound that is best known as the cannabinoid created when THC ages. The degradation of THC can be accelerated depending on how your cannabis is stored so you’re likely to find high amounts of CBN in older cannabis. Some might view ‘old weed’ as a bad thing and a turn-off, but utilizing aged cannabis to access the effects of CBN is a good thing!

What are the benefits?

While CBN and its potential benefits are currently being explored through research, the following benefits have come up in recent studies.

Antibacterial

Some strains of bacterial infections are resistant to traditional antibiotic medications due to the prolonged prescribing of traditional antibiotics. This means that treating certain bacterial infections can be very difficult and leaves the individual feeling sick for a longer period of time.

In a recent study, CBN was tested on strains of MRSA bacteria that have been proven to be resistant to traditional treatments. Researchers found that CBN was actually a potent agent in combating these resistant strains. Maybe soon, CBN will be the go-to for physicians when trying to treat bacterial infections, especially those that are resistant and difficult to treat.

Neuroprotectant

As a credit to the social media challenge a few years back, the average person is now aware of what ALS is and just how debilitating the neurodegenerative disease can be. While this disease can be scary to think about, we may have some hope in CBN. In a study conducted on rodents, CBN was shown to delay the onset of the condition. While there have been no human trials as of this time, the evidence suggests that CBN may be a powerful tool in the future to utilize as a neuroprotectant.

Appetite Stimulation

If you are someone who would rather opt to avoid THC due to its mind-altering effects, but you need help with appetite stimulation, then choosing products with CBN would be an excellent choice. In rodent studies, CBN was shown to increase the amount of food that the subjects ate, which is a good indicator that it increases appetites. Although further studies are needed, CBN could be a great alternative for those who don’t want to get high, but still want to eat more.

Glaucoma

Due to a recent study conducted on rabbits that showed CBN decreased intraocular pressure, the cannabinoid may very well be the future in glaucoma treatment. This intraocular pressure is the biggest cause of glaucoma.

THC has been known to help treat this as well, but for individuals who don’t want to feel the high sensation associated with THC, CBN may be the next available option. However, human trials have not yet been conducted with CBN for the treatment of glaucoma.

Anti-Inflammatory

Just like CBD, CBN is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. In a rodent study, CBN was shown to reduce arthritis in the animals tested. While more research needs to be conducted, CBN very well could be another natural solution for those who suffer from joint pain and arthritis, as well as other degenerative diseases.
