Is There a Connection Between Cannabis and Dopamine? Taking a Closer Look

A young woman smokes a cannabis joint

A young woman smokes a cannabis jointFor the past several years, research has taken place to explore dopamine and its connection to cannabis. This includes examining how different cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, have an impact on dopamine levels. As it turns out, both have an influence, just in different ways. Here at our cannabis dispensary in Port Hueneme, we want to explore some of the research and take a closer look.

What is dopamine?

Before we get into how cannabis influences dopamine, it’s important to learn what exactly dopamine is. While you might have learned in your introductory psychology class that it’s a neurotransmitter in the brain, it also does so much more!

Defining Neurotransmitters

Inside of our brain, there is a system that transmits messages and signals between cells. When this occurs, electric charges release chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are responsible for triggering a huge array of functions and feelings, such as sensations (pain, pleasure, itchiness, etc.) to instructions on how and when to blink, breathe, and even move our extremities. Each of these neurotransmitters has a unique function to perform. For example, adrenaline triggers your fight or flight response and serotonin works to regulate your mood.

Neurotransmitters and Dopamine

Dopamine is perhaps one of the most misrepresented neurotransmitters thanks to media and other sensationalism. While it is often deemed as the ‘pleasure neurotransmitter’ or the ‘feel good chemical’, it is actually much more complex than that.

Dopamine is just a piece to a broader puzzle. In fact, the way that it influences pleasure in the brain happens more indirectly than it does directly. Have you ever heard the term ‘motivational salience’? Dopamine influences this concept, meaning that it helps stimulate one’s motivation. In turn, this piques one’s curiosity, desire, and drive, typically prompting them to do things that brought them pleasure in the past. This puts them on a reward seeking loop, meaning that they are more inclined to repeat actions that made them feel good previously.

Because of the way it works, the reward system that dopamine creates is a large part of what keeps us alive and well. Think about it – when you’re hungry, you get a reward for eating. Not just the sensation of feeling full, but typically the taste and enjoyment of eating good food as well. That is just one example, but there are many, many more!

The Endocannabinoid System

As far as scientific discoveries go, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a relatively new one. Dating back to only 1992, this biological system hasn’t had a lot of research yet, though more and more happens each day. Currently, the research shows that the ECS plays a role in maintaining and regulating various functions throughout the body. This includes influencing the release of virtually all neurotransmitters, heavily impacting things such as appetite, immune response, sleep, memory, mood, and so much more.

Cannabinoids and the ECS

Cannabis is chalk full of cannabinoids (as the name suggests!), including THC, CBD, CBN, and more. In fact, there are over a hundred different endocannabinoid receptors in the body! Depending on which cannabinoid you choose impacts how it affects the body and the health benefits that come with it. THC is best known for having psychoactive effects on the brain, while CBD does not. Both do affect dopamine levels, though they do so in different ways.

THC and Dopamine

THC is actually very similar in shape to anandamide, which is a naturally occurring endocannabinoid that helps to fine tune nerve communication. This means that THC can bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors just like the endogenous anandamide might. In other words, this barrs anademide from binding instead, blocking off parts of the nervous system, keeping them from functioning as normal. Researchers believe that this is part of the reason that THC creates psychoactive effects.

Because THC binds to the CB1 receptors in the brain, it has influence over different areas such as mood, memory, concentration, sensation, and even time perception. One study has shown that consuming THC causes a short-term spike in dopamine levels in the brain. This activates the brain’s reward system. This is another indication that consuming THC causes euphoria.

What makes all of this extremely interesting is one vital fact: dopamine neurons do not have cannabinoid receptors. However, there is another receptor that does – GABA – so it is believed that THC may impact dopamine indirectly by altering GABA levels.

CBD and Dopamine

Canabidnoil, or better known as CBD, has many modulating effects on both the brain and the body. It is best known for its ability to help decrease inflammation, relieve pain, provide neuroprotection, and assist with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression

Due to its shape, CBD cannot bind with the C1 and C2 receptors of the brain like THC does. It would be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. So instead of binding to the receptors, CBD influences and communicates with the neurons in a more indirect way.

Across various studies, CBD has been shown to help regulate the dopamine present in the brain – whether by increasing or decreasing it accordingly. Parkinson’s Disease and depression are two illnesses that are directly linked to an extreme deficit of dopamine. Psychosis is a disorder linked to having too much dopamine. Due to this, it remains on the frontier for possibly curing Parkinson’s and acting as a more affordable way to treat mental health disorders without any of the prescription drugs that have many harmful side effects.

The Takeaway

Due to the newness of cannabis research, more conclusive evidence will need to be drawn around the connection between cannabis and dopamine. However, much promising headway has already been made, especially in regards to THC and CBD both. Only time will tell, but with the groundwork that has already been laid, we are sure to see more concrete evidence.

Cannabis and Black History Month: Taking a Closer Look at the Roots of Cannabis

A logo for Black History Month

A logo for Black History Month

February is Black History Month, meaning that is the perfect time to examine how cannabis and Black Americans are tied to one another. Black Americans have helped shape the landscape of cannabis in the United States, though unfortunately, this does include a storied history of racism and injustice. Here at our cannabis dispensary in Port Hueneme, we want to take a moment to look at the history of cannabis, and acknowledge just how Black Americans have helped to legalize and destigmatize cannabis usage as a whole.

A Brief Background on Cannabis

While the origins of harvesting cannabis date back to as early as 500 B.C. in Central Asia, it eventually made its way through South Asia, then to India, and onto the Arab nations. This is the reason that some of the terms for cannabis are actually Sanskrit words, including ‘ganja’.

From there, thanks to the vast trading system, cannabis made its way to various parts of Africa some time during the 13th century. During the 1800s, the British used indentured servants from India and took them to the Caribbean to work on the sugar and rubber plantations located there on the islands. Some of these servants brought cannabis with them.

What resulted was a blending of Indian and Jamaican cultures with cannabis being introduced to the Black, Jamaican field workers. It was in 1833 when Britain declared that slavery was illegal, effectively outlawing it and freeing the Indian slaves that were on the islands. These individuals left the plantations and moved into various parts of Jamaica and Barbados, settling in and making lives, which in turn, made cannabis increase in popularity as it became introduced to more people.

So how did cannabis wind up in the United States? Sailors, immigrants, and trade merchants from the Caribbean brought cannabis with them to the ports. From there, Black and Brown communities began partaking in cannabis recreationally. However, the United States was hardly a stranger to cannabis in the first place, as many Black Americans during that time period had grandparents who worked on hemp plantations.

To this day, Jamaica and cannabis are still thought of together quite frequently, especially when looking at pop culture icon Bob Marley as well as other famous island musicians.

The War on Drugs

Under Richard Nixon’s presidency, the United States was subjected to a campaign best known as the ‘War on Drugs’. While this campaign, which began in 1971, is often seen as the culprit behind the criminalization of cannabis, the issues truly began with Henry J. Anslinger. In 1930, the end of prohibition, there was the formation of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, and with it, the first commissioner, Anslinger.

At the time Anslinger was brought into office, heroin and cocaine were already outlawed, leading to only one viable option to criminalize: cannabis. Despite the fact that prior to his term, he had gone on record to state the idea of cannabis making people ‘mad’ or violent was absurd, he still kept after criminalizing cannabis. This led to him attacking jazz music and cannabis, both of which were rooted in Black culture.

Jump ahead to the 1970s when Nixon was in office. Thanks to his administration, there is a huge disparity between how Black people and people of color get treated and persecuted when faced with drug charges compared to those who are white. These effects are still felt to this very day. In fact, according to a study conducted by UCLA, Black people are nearly four times as likely to get arrested for a cannabis-related crime than compared to white people.

The presidency of Ronald Reagan also played a role in this storied history as well and included his Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986. Not only did this further criminalize cannabis, but it also created something called mandatory sentencing laws. This meant that even for a petty, non-violent crime, such as marijuana possession, the person convicted would have to spend a minimum of five years in prison – a punishment that hardly fit the crime. Because of this, private prisons filled up with mostly Black men, and has cost the United States taxpayers a whopping $2.5 trillion.

A Brighter Future

While cannabis and the treatment of Black Americans have come a long way in recent years, there is still so much ground to make up. The legalization of cannabis has brought some amazing changes, including actually decreasing crime rates. In fact, violent crime in California has fallen by 15%. That means a lot to us personally, especially here at our cannabis dispensary in Port Hueneme, CA.

It is high time to right the wrongs and injustices carried out by the war on drugs, and no, we aren’t just referring to Nixon’s campaign. Those efforts were clearly rooted in racism and meant as a way to monetize the maltreatment of Black Americans. To begin with, anyone who is currently serving a sentence due to a non-violent, drug-related crime should be freed and have their records expunged. To still be serving time for something that is no longer illegal, and never should have been in the first place, is the antithesis of justice.

Not only that, but reparations should be made to Black and Brown communities all across America for the injustices that have been served. Social and equity programs need to be implemented to help those who were wrongfully prosecuted recover and reintegrate. Education remains at the forefront of change, though, and will make us hopeful for the future. By funding the education of cannabis for the new generation, we will help to unlearn the falsehoods enacted over the last four hundred years.

Until the current cannabis industry sees these types of changes, we will not be able to truly move forward. So this February, not only think about the Black Americans who have suffered due to wanting to freely enjoy cannabis, but do what you can to be a part of the change. Vote, advocate, donate: when we all come together, then we will truly pave the way for a brighter future.

The 5 Easiest Marijuana Strains For Beginners to Grow

If you’re looking at growing your own weed, it might seem fairly simple to start. While that is true to some degree, it’s also important to know that some strains are easier than others to grow. For example, some have more delicate tendencies than others, or might even be prone to mold where other strains aren’t. A few things you might want to ask prior to beginning, such as inquiring about which strains you are able to miss watering for a day or which ones are highly susceptible to shifts in environment?

If you hadn’t considered these questions, that’s okay! Our cannabis dispensary in Port Hueneme is here to help you sort this information out and make the growing process just a little bit simpler. Keep reading to learn more about the five easiest strains to grow!

Strain #1: Blue Dream

Perhaps one of the most popular strains available on the market, Blue Dream is a total classic for all cannabis enthusiasts. Originating in Northern California, Blue Dream is a cross between Blueberry and Haze, two well-known parent strains. Typically, it has high yields, growing big and tall thanks to its sativa-dominant roots. For the best results, be sure to build a scrog, or a structure, to go around the plant. Scrogs are usually made of PVC pipe, as it is weather-resistant and durable. Think of it like a cage that goes around a tomato plant.

If you are a newbie in the realm of cannabis growing, Blue Dream is the perfect starter strain. This is due mostly to how resilient it is, continuing to grow even if you forget to water it one day or go a little too hard on the nutrient feedings. The best part is that it can even handle cold nights, and grows well in both indoor and outdoor settings. So, for the most part, no matter what climate you live in, you are sure to have a thriving cannabis plant.

Strain #2: Wedding Cake

No, we’re not talking about the delicious treat served at wedding receptions. But we are, however, referring to one of the newest strains available. This rising star in the cannabis world, Wedding Cake, is a Cookies cross that is Indica-dominant and grows short and stout. You will still see quality yields and dense buds, though. Just make sure that you stay on top of pruning to help prevent molding along the way – that would certainly feel like rain on your wedding day!

One of the reasons it is dubbed Wedding Cake is because of the trichomes on top that appear frosty and sticky, like a glaze. These are also quite fragrant, smelling of citrus and vanilla that is really appealing and sweet, as any treat should be. So while this one is slightly more difficult to upkeep, the pay off is absolutely worth i

Strain #3: Super Lemon Haze

If you like things that taste a bit citrusy, then you will want to check into growing Super Lemon Haze. It is a cross between two major contenders: Super Silver Haze and Lemon Skunk. Due to the strong amount of sativa that exists in its origins, this cannabis plant will do better in warmer climates, bonus points if there is some humidity. However, it is still pretty versatile and can grow in most settings.

While it is low-maintenance in terms of attention, Super Lemon Haze will need some space to grow. Like the parent strain Lemon Skunk, this cannabis strain will want to stretch out. Of course, scrogging, or building some sort of support system, will help, though it is not entirely necessary. Also, don’t expect to jump up and harvest right away. You will need a bit of patience, as it takes Super Lemon Haze about nine weeks to flower, yet another sign of its sativa origins.

A close up of a nugget of cannabis

Strain #4: GMO Cookies

Unlike the last two strains mentioned above, GMO Cookies brings an odd yet satisfying combination of scents to the game: garlic and cookies. Now, we know what you are thinking, but this new strain is becoming the talk of the town for a reason. A cross between two big-name strains, GSC and Chemdog, GMO Cookies has some unique traits:

  • Light green buds with orange hairs
  • Dense and sticky
  • Produces a higher yield
  • Trichome levels perfect for pressing hash

Another ideal trait about it is that it can handle growing both indoors and outdoors. However, once again, make sure to execute patience when growing, as it takes about nine to ten weeks to flower and be ready for harvest. It will be worth the wait though, as GMO Cookies brings a new flavor as well as a quality high.

Strain #5: Sour OG

If you are on the hunt for something truly outside of the box to grow, but is still relatively simple in terms of growing, we suggest testing the waters with Sour OG. Skunk, spice, fuel, and hints of lemon and pine all combine forces to create something truly special. A combination of OG Kush and Sour Diesel, this will be a strain you will want to try.

Compared to the other strains listed above, this one will have a fairly quicker yield time of around 8 weeks. Just make sure that this particular plan had a trellis and a scrog for maximum yields. Again, humidity is best for this strain and allows for the production of denser buds. All in all, Sour OG is a great choice if you want something that is both potent and features a unique blend of flavors.

What is an Infused Pre-Rolled Joint?

Close up of hand holding joint with smoke

Close up of hand holding joint with smoke

When you look at the wide array of cannabis products on the market, one can understand why it may feel overwhelming to navigate. There are hundreds of brands producing a variety of different products that appeal to people of all backgrounds. Many of us wonder – What product is right for me? How do I choose?

When shopping for a product it’s important to do your research, ask questions and always buy from a legal business. Learning how to navigate this industry takes time and willingness to learn. For those looking to dip their toes in the water or something they can enjoy on the go – pre-rolls are a good place to start.

Pre-rolls have always been a popular option, especially for those who appreciate the convenience of having their favorite flower perfectly rolled and ready to smoke. Plus, they are easy to take out and enjoy with only a lighter. Quick, discrete, and perfectly dosed, pre-rolls are a great choice.

While it can be fun to experiment with different types of bongs and vaping methods, sometimes all you want is the ease of enjoying a perfectly rolled joint that will burn evenly and give you the perfect high. Now, thanks to infusions, you can amplify this experience with an enhanced version of your favorite pre-roll and really diversify your cannabis experience. Combining together a blend of flower and resin, you are able to maximize not only the potency and quality of your high but the flavor and smoothness of it as well.

So, what exactly is an infused pre-roll? Let’s take a closer look!

Infused Pre-Rolls: The Breakdown

The aim or goal for the common pre-roll is that it is perfectly crafted by a professional and contains the best flower that the dispensary or shop has to offer. It is designed to provide a balanced, enjoyable smoke without any of the hassles that can come with having to roll it yourself.

An infused joint goes just a step beyond that and exists to include add-ins or ingredients to help boost both flavor and the type of high. This can include hash, oil, kief, a combination of strains or flavors, or even diamonds (the cannabis derived ones that is). They can be as small as a half gram or be made up of multiple grams, with a price range starting at $9 and working up to over $100. Whatever kind of combination you’re after, it can be purchased!

A popular option includes both a THC and CBD combination infusion, especially when being used for medicinal purposes. These tend to have a higher concentration of CBD resins, oil, and strains to better harness the healing qualities of CBD. If you find the right mix for you, you can both receive your desired head high as well as the high you want for your body, too.

Of course, you can craft an infusion roll at home, but just like when you go to a professional bartender and your drink always tastes better, the same concept applies here. Let the pros take care of this one and just kick back and enjoy the enhanced flavor and high!

Why the hype?

With these infused pre-rolls gaining traction and sparking in popularity, you may stop and ask yourself: so why the hype? According to data brought forth by Marijuana Business Daily, pre-rolls sales skyrocketed during the pandemic. Prior to COVID-19, pre-roll sales made approximately $640 million. By the end of 2020, those numbers had made a significant leap to $942 million.

The pandemic affected these sales because rather than attending parties and smoking with friends, people were opting to purchase professional pre-rolls, especially if they were partaking alone. This helped to minimize any waste or over-rolling. It also allowed customers to sample a larger variety of bud, rather than having to buy one particular flower and keep smoking that until it was gone.

Infused rolls help accomplish the same thing. You are able to try out many different infusion blends, finding the right product and mix for you for any particular occasion. If you need something more on the medical side, you can get something with a higher CBD potency. If you’re wanting to experiment with flavors, you can purchase something with a particular wax or oil add-in.

Just like the magic of a build your own burrito place, you can select the perfect combination for yourself!

5 Types of Cannabis Extraction Methods

When it comes to cannabis, creating extracts is important, as this allows us to make a variety of products rather than simply just smoking flower. Since smoking isn’t everyone’s preference, or is difficult for those with particular medical conditions, such as asthma, having a variety of options available allows cannabis to be more accessible and functional. The products are sold at your local cannabis dispensary

Cannabis Extract Dosing

An extract is a concentrated form of cannabis. This means that it contains the ingredients that matter the most – cannabinoids. The creation of extracts allows for more accurate dosing and a stronger, longer-lasting product. Alcohol, butane, CO2, Cold Water, and ethanol are all common methods of cannabis extraction.

While cannabis is extremely safe to use, ensuring proper dosage is key to maximizing the health benefits that it has to offer. . Extracts allow manufacturers to know exactly how much of a cannabinoid is going into a product which means you are less likely to accidentally ingest too much.

Butane Honey Oil Extraction

One method that is used predominantly in the food and perfume industry is the butane honey oil (BHO) extraction method. For the start of this extraction process, cannabis is placed in a container prior to being sprayed with butane. Then, the cannabinoids and butane are collected in another container.

After that, the mixture must be left so that the butane can evaporate properly, or a vacuum over may also be used to remove all of the butane as well. Due to the highly flammable nature of the substance, it is dangerous to do in certain conditions. Utilizing a closed-loop system specifically made for BHO extraction is much safer.

As the end result, the BHO extraction should result in a substance that has about 80% THC levels.

Supercritical CO2 Oil Extraction

A non-toxic, environmentally friendly method of separating cannabinoids from the cannabis plant is by using CO2 extraction. This method is highly effective and leaves behind zero toxins. This is great, especially because it is popularly used to be infused into beverages, such as beer, coffee, fruit extracts, and even teas.

For the process itself, supercritical CO2 is heated and then passed through buds of cannabis. The liquid that is passed through the separator will help to remove any lingering CO2 gases from the trichomes and terpenes.

In order to be an environmentally friendly method, the gas will go through a condenser, allowing it to be liquified once again and used in a future extraction process. This process is very specific and requires precise equipment, but is great for mixing waxes and oils.

Ethanol Extraction

Because it is safe, efficient, and effective, a process that is rising in popularity is the ethanol extraction method. Ethanol is an organic chemical compound that is often used as a food preservative. According to FDA guidelines, it is considered ‘generally safe’ for consumption.

To begin this process, a cannabis plant is soaked in ethanol to extract the THC. After that, the remaining product is put through a refining process, enhancing the purity of the product. The ethanol will work to remove any of the unwanted compounds, which aids in improving the flavor as well as the pure quality.

Overall, this process focuses on creating an extract that is pure and well-refined.

Cold Water Extraction

For a process that doesn’t use any sort of solvents or chemicals, opting for water extraction is a great choice. This method submerges the cannabis plant into a container or vat of freezing water. Then, the plant is stirred, causing the trichomes to separate and fall off. Once this happens, the trichomes will then pass through a series of screens.

While this process is relatively simplistic compared to the others, this results in a product that has anywhere from 50-70% THC levels.

Isopropyl Oil Extraction

For this method, dried cannabis flowers are soaked in isopropyl alcohol and then shaken gently. The alcohol works to strip down the trichomes from the plant. From there, the mixture is strained into a dish. The solvent is removed using a special vacuum oven that keeps the temperature under 181 degrees. Once the solvent completely evaporates, the remaining substance is a THC-rich oil.

Uses & Products

When it comes to actually using the extracts, it is important to take a look at the types of products they go into, and what options are available for purchase.

  • Vaping
Vaping is a popular choice, as it is portable, discrete, and you can choose from a variety of extracts and potency. The heating element in a vape is called the ‘atomizer’. When exposed to the atomizer, cannabis extracts are heated to the point of vaporization, which creates vapor rather than smoke. For those who don’t like to traditionally smoke, or who is after a different experience, try checking out vaping instead.

  • Dabbing
Another way to enjoy cannabis extracts is by dabbing them. This is a popular choice among the more experienced cannabis users as it does require some specialized hardware. However, this is a great way to increase potency while using less product.

To learn more about this method, check out this in-depth article regarding dabbing and how to safely use it.

  • Infusing Edibles

Cannabis extracts can also be infused into food and beverages. This is an option for both THC and CBD extracts.

Cannabinoids degrade when exposed to high temperatures, so it is recommended to add any extracts after the food or beverage is already fully cooked. Or, you can simply buy edibles professionally pre-made using various extracts. Reading the labels or product descriptions will aid you when trying to find the proper dosing as well.

Overall, the creation and usage of extracts is not a new concept to the world of cannabis, but learning about the varieties of options and how they are made helps the consumer become better informed.
